Green Day at the Newport

This is… pretty unrelated to most of the things that I post. I used to shoot shows pretty often, but it does not pay the bills at all, so I don’t have the time to do it much these days. I got to go take pictures of Green Day in Columbus the day before their new album came out, for Green Day Authority. I'm kind of a fan, so I was pretty stoked. I got to cover three songs, which is usually how these things go, and they started with Bang Bang, Revolution Radio, and Know Your Enemy. I'm glad they chose that last one, because a) they tend to vamp a lot in it, which means I got more time to shoot and b) they almost always pull up some kid for a stage dive.

Dog Party opened for them, and did a solid cover of Rebel Girl.

Mike Dirnt's just happy to be here.

I just want some action, so gimme Mike Dirnt. I can't unhear it now.

I always end up with this shot in my roll somewhere. I have one of Frank Turner's hand tattoos that I love.

And this one. I'm big on trying to catch people's mannerisms, so it's a lot of hands and feet and detail shots. At least he wears fun socks.

I sincerely want a fiddle with this glitter finish, someone please find me one.

We had a chat about my excellent Pinhead Gunpowder shirt, but then we both had to go back to work. It actually took me around 10 frames to realize he was talking to me.

This would be the kid they pulled up to stage dive.

They cut one of the encores from the set list, but they still played some of the deep cuts. A few I hadn't heard live yet.

If you want to see more of these (seriously, I have even more of these), check out the Flickr gallery. You can see more personal posts and tips from me. Have a question? Get in touch!
